OTHER NEWS AND EVENTS

The Suffolk Literacy Council has received grants from the Suffolk Foundation, the Community Action Coalition, and the Richard Bennett Trust. Local businesses that have contributed monetary gifts to support our efforts include Birdsong Peanuts and Wal-Mart on Main Street. Organizations that have made donations include the Pilot Club of Suffolk, the Rotary Club of Suffolk, the Suffolk Women’s Club, Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority, and the Nansemond Isle of Wright Sunday School Union. The SLC has also benefited from donations from individuals. All funding for the SLC comes from grants, donations and fundraisers. Community support enables the SLC to continue to carry out its mission.

CONGRATULATIONS to Hope Dunlow.

The Suffolk Literacy Council’s Volunteer Tutor of the Year, Hope Dunlow, has been associated with the Council for a very long time. She participated in our first tutor training workshop in May of 1988. She represented the Virginia Employment Commission at a Literacy Symposium and was a member of our Board for several terms beginning in 1993. In 1994, she served as secretary. Hope recently retired after 28 years as Workforce Representative with the Virginia Employment Commission. She rejoined our Board and currently serves as Vice-President. This past September, Hope—who is a very busy retiree--took a tutor training workshop as a refresher, and told us that she would be ready to tutor again in January. We were ready for her! She was assigned a student in early January. They faithfully meet each week, and he is making good progress towards becoming a reader. Our tutors teach reading to adult non-readers and those with low reading skills. This requires dedication on the part of the tutor. It also requires a lot of patience. Some students progress at a steady rate, but many have a learning barrier and other challenges that make progress slow. Hope exemplifies the qualities that make a good tutor. She is dedicated and patient. We are pleased to recognize Hope Dunlow as our Volunteer Tutor of the Year.
